The Impact Of The Iran Nuclear Agreement

In October 2010, the P5-1 extended a new invitation to Iran to discuss its nuclear program, but did not accept Iran`s request to Turkey or Brazil to participate. [59] Talks resumed on 6 December 2010 in Geneva, during which the P5-1 sought assurances that Iran`s nuclear programme would remain peaceful and Iran called for the lifting of international sanctions. [60] At the end of January 2011, diplomats met for the next roundtable in Istanbul, Turkey. The talks failed because Iran insisted that all economic sanctions be lifted as a precondition for substantive talks on its nuclear program. [61] On April 30, 2018, at an exhibition on nuclear technology, President Hassan Rouhani presented the seizure of more than 100,000 documents by the Israeli secret services of documents that he described as “Iran`s secret nuclear archive”. Mr. Netanyahu said the documents showed that Iran had indeed pursued a nuclear weapons program consisting of five 10-kiloton warheads that ended in 2003. [118] These figures suggest that Iran`s nuclear weapons ambitions have presented a rudimentary agenda compared to other nuclear-weapon States. [119] Netanyahu asserted that Iran`s lack of transparency over its previous nuclear efforts meant that the JCPOA had been negotiated under false pretenses, while others, such as British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, claimed that the revelations about Iran`s nuclear activities supported the need for the JCPOA and its inspection regime. [120] Europeans reacted more harshly to Iran`s decision to enrich uranium by more than 3.67%. “Iran has broken the conditions of the JCPOA,” said a spokesman for the British Foreign Office. “While the UK remains fully committed to the agreement, Iran must cease and immediately cancel all activities inconsistent with its obligations.” Germany said it was “extremely concerned” and would await further information from the International Atomic Energy Agency. “We urge Iran to put an end to all activities inconsistent with its obligations under the JCPOA,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

A wide range of U.S. sanctions, which had nothing to do with the nuclear program, were also present. Multinational companies feared being held accountable for transactions with the many companies sanctioned, for example, by the IRGC, which is overwhelmed by certain sectors.
